The Xcerts

The Xcerts

Slackerpop

The Xcerts - Slackerpop -
If ever there was a misnomer for The Xcerts’ music, it would be 'slackerpop,' which is the name of the group’s single. The term ‘slacker’ is likely far out of vogue by now. However, there once was a time when any good-for-nothing, anti-ambitious teen and barely-post-teen was referred to as a slacker. These are people that play too many video games and more than likely smoke too much pot. These are the mouth-breathers. These are the real life Beavis and Buttheads of the world. They watch the world go by, make rude remarks and never lift a finger to right any of the wrong things they see.

In contrast, The Xcerts’ singer Murray Macleod sounds emotional to the extreme. He calls girls darlin’ and sounds like a latter day Paul Westerberg. He’s also a gentle soul. In fact, the only time he gets loud and rowdy is during the punk-ish “Slackerpop,” which features charging guitars and sometimes screamed vocals. Elsewhere, The Xcerts songs are relatively quiet. “Gum” features a The Cars-y electric guitar intro and a touch of piano, while “Young (Belane)” incorporates strings.

It’s hard to believe this trio is actually from Scotland. Vocalist Murray Macleod is a dead ringer for Bill Mallonee of the Georgian band, Vigilantes Of Love. As a side note, Macleod appears to suffer from insomnia because he mentions sleep trouble often throughout these five songs. In “He Sinks He Sleeps," Macleod admits, “I wish I could sleep at night.”

The world will always have its slackers, unfortunately, as well as bands and artists that sound just too bored to care. Thankfully, The Xcerts aren’t one of these bad eggs. Let’s just hope nobody picks up on the single “Slackerpop” and build a whole genre around its title. Then we’ll really be in trouble. The Xcerts are a fantastic new band, and these five songs only make you want to hear many more.
